First Aid for my violet wand…

This information was supplied by Violet Wanda:

Your knob spindle was just jammed all the way up to the ‘high’ setting and stopped.  Then when you turned it down, the knob turned to the left but the spindle didn’t, and the knob came loose from the spindle.  This is actually how you have to put the knob on, (turn the knob on, and turn it up toward the high setting till the knob is on tight, then turn it down and the spindle comes along with the knob). But your spindle was jammed to the high setting and didn’t come back along with the knob.

If you turned it too high so that the spindle jammed up ‘high’ this can happen, but I’ll tell you how to fix yourself.

TO FIX THIS

get a tiny 7/32 open end wrench

You want the open end of the wrench.  Turn the wand’s knob to the left until it comes off.  Then get a pair of pliers and turn the spindle down from its jammed-high position.  Turn it down a good bit.  You’ll feel the gears engage and give you the familiar ‘clicking’ sound as you turn the wand down with the pliers.

Next, below the washers that are under the knob will be the 7/32 part of the spindle where you will hold it the spindle still with the wrench.  It’s the bottom part of the spindle. The wrench part is fatter than the threaded part for the knob and has two flat sides for the wrench.  Put the wrench under the top washer and hold the fat part of the spindle still with the wrench with one hand. You’re holding the spindle still with the wrench while you turn the knob onto it and tighten the knob onto the spindle.

Then with the other hand, turn the knob onto the narrow part of the spindle.  The knob will keep turning to the right.  Keep turning it on until its tight. After the knob gets tight onto the spindle, you can wiggle the wrench out from between the washers.  If you’ve tightened the knob on too tight, you can back it down a turn or two, enough to get the wrench out from the tight space.  After that your knob will be tight on the spindle and the spindle will turn with the knob.  Be careful of turning the wand up so high to the right that the spindle gets jammed in the high position again.  But now you can fix it if it does.
